A big part of my working life is helping other graphic designers create websites based on their designs. I will take the other designers work, firstly analyse it and advise if any adjustments need to be made, and then implement that design into a working website. I have collaborated with designer Rob Davis (http://robdavisdesigner.co.uk/) on a number of projects, and last year he invited me to help him realise a simple but sophisticated design for a new children’s book project called ‘Makooky’.
Rob’s design took the art from the book and created a really playful scene in space. It needed an animated spinning asteroid, parallax scrolling alien rivers, and as with all things web these days, it needed to be fully responsive and graceful in the bounce-down in resolution.
I used a variety of techniques such as HTML5 canvas animation, jquery-powered parallax background layers and vector image formats to fully realise this design in the form of a website. Various challenges presented themeselves along the way, mainly in regard to the responsive aspect, and how the animated elements would work on smaller devices. The landscape of phones, tablets and software used around the globe is a truely ever-changing landscape, so in order to make something truely bespoke work fluidly between all of the different resolutions is quite a challenge. However, I was able to solve many of these issues through my experience as a developer, and in the end the final product was delivered and looked the part.
